Railway Coaches

A railway coach may be defined as a railroad car designed to carry passengers and a carriage from one part to another. This is also known as bogie.

This mode of transportation is quite useful when a carriage or passenger must move for a long distance without any time constraints. This is very useful in a country with less income like India where people usually want to save money but do not worry about time.

Types of Coaches based on Color

There are different types of bogies used in Indian railways. Some of them have been given below-

·       Red Bogie:

This type of imported bogie arrived from Germany in the year 2000. In the initial phase Indian railway imports bogies which are manufactured in different countries but with time these bogies manufacturing has started in Kapurthala, India.

The major specifications of such coaches are as follows-

-       These are also known as LHB or Link Hofmann Busch

-       These coaches are equipped with a center buffer cooling system thus during accidents coaches don’t ride on top of others.

-       These are lightweight as most of the components are made with Al alloy which has sufficiently lower density rather than steel.

-       The coaches can run at relatively higher speeds (200 KMPH) because of lower weight.

-        These coaches are preferred in the premium class train which usually runs at higher speeds such as Satabadi, Duranto, Rajdhani etc.

-       These coaches are equipped with a disc brake rather than an air brake because the train speed is higher and needs to apply brake the train into steps.

·       Blue Bogie

These coaches are manufactured in Integrated Coach Factory short ICF, Chennai and this is also known as the birthplace of such coaches. These are quite common coach types in India as most of the tracks are old and designed for moderate speed only.

The major specifications of such coaches are as follows-

-       These coaches are designed for moderate speed (70-140 KMPH).

-       These coaches are equipped with air brakes.

-       These coaches are preferred in moderate-speed trains like mail express, superfast trains, etc.

-       The overhaul period is 18 months after continuous usage.

·       Green Bogie

These are economy-class coaches which are widely used in the train category of Garib-Rath.

The major specifications of such coaches are as follows-

-       These category coaches have limited spaces to accommodate more seats.

-       These coaches are used for low-speed trains and with low fares.

-       The coaches are sometimes used in meter gauge trains also.
